How can I make the site private until I am ready to launch?

Administration->System->Maintenance Mode

When you place a site into maintenance mode, you can get to the log in link by going to the /user page.

Hmmm...I don't seem to "see" the same options. Administration isn't a first level nav, for me, it's under :

Configuration -> Administration and the only option to navigate to from there is Administration Menu...
