Altered/destroyed original basic template ; was able to re-add basic page template & recreate pages ( note: Nodes 1-9 are still there with bodyclass line is missing type basic component).Tried redirecting index page with a newer node via alias redirect but having issues with site appearing without https login.

please advise...

Instead of an alias redirect, try adjusting your default front page in your site settings:
Configuration -> System -> Site Information
As for the http vs https, I browsed your site over http, and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. One thing to try if you make a change that doesn't seem to appear is to clear your caches.
From the first item in the top left of the administration menu, select Flush All Caches.
