Glitch or spam? - Many form submissions received within one hour.

Hi,
Wondering if it's possible that the server could have just released a bunch of form submissions at once. I have two forms which I had NOT required authentication on (but auth. is ON now!).
From one of the forms, we just received 22 subs in an hour. I imagine it's spam, but just wanted to ask about the possibility of the server belching out some retained forms?
The site is wgssi.mit.edu.The forms are the Membership form and the Supstaff email list signup form.
